Seminar - Multisensory Urban Design. Tools and methodologies for representing the sensorial form of the urban ambiance
17th of January 2013, Politecnico di Milano, Laboratorio di Simulazione Urbana Fausto Curti
Aim of the seminar is to tackle the topic of the sensorial urbanism: through sight, hearing, touch and smell it is possible to perceive, in the urban environment, invisible layers intertwined together and defined by the different elements that constitute the built environment.
These elements are perceived simultaneously by the city-users, however, in the common urban design practices, the sense of sight plays a privileged role, whereas the auditory and olfactory spheres are often treated merely as pollutants, that need to be limited according to current regulations.
The seminar wants to focus on the tools and methodologies that could be applied for describing the multisensorial form of the urban environment, and how these elements can be seen as useful materials for the design of urban open spaces.
