About

Cresson-AAU is pleased to announce the next Winter School on Sound Ambiences, which will take place at ENSA Grenoble from 13 to 17 January 2025. This year’s theme will be Echoes of the Living.

You can find the presentation and registration details at https://ehas.hypotheses.org/7269

The aim of this intensive week is to raise awareness of listening and the use of sound (recording, analysis, editing, broadcasting, etc.) as a means of understanding, representing and qualitatively transforming contemporary spaces.

‘Echoes of the living’ evokes both the characteristic sonic effects of mountain and urban environments, and the expression of a living world in transformation and mutation, acting as a warning signal, encouraging us to be more vigilant in the face of changes in our living spaces.

By extending the laboratory’s historical questions and methods beyond the human, the aim is to explore the possible interactions between the different facets of the living world through the prism of sound. In doing so, we will be looking at the ways in which humans and non-humans listen to and emit sound, and how they interact with the urban environment. How does living sound manifest itself? What awakenings, shifts and revelations does this listening offer us? The aim is to experiment with new ways of getting to know the city, through sound experiments and sensitive practices that invite us to rethink and reinvent it.

This thematic school offers participants the chance to try out a range of sound-related methodologies, from analysis to creation. This year, we will also be exploring radio as a means of dissemination, experimentation, creation and performance (in partnership with Radio Campus Grenoble), in addition to the laboratory’s other methods (surveys, sound recording, production, composition). The week will be punctuated by lectures, workshops in the field and a feedback session at the end of the session.
